SAVE TROY DAVIS!

The NAACP Law Fellows need your help. A man by the name of Troy Davis has been on death row for nearly twenty years for a crime he did not commit. His execution has been stayed numerous times as people continue to fight to save his life.

Troy Davis was wrongfully convicted for the murder of an off-duty police officer and sentenced to death in the state of Georgia, despite a lack of physical evidence presented at trial. The prosecutor relied solely on witness testimony in securing a judgment against Davis. Seven of the nine witnesses who assisted in putting this innocent man on death row have now recanted their testimony in affidavits alleging police coercion.

We urge you to help us in this fight to help save an innocent man from being deprived of his life, liberty, and justice, principles that are engrained in our constitution. Have not only your fellow BLSA members, but all of your classmates and colleagues go to http://www.iamtroy.com/ and sign the petition to save Troy Davis from being put to death for a crime he did not commit!

Samhra Stevenson-Smith, Noele Hosley, Annaleigh Porter, Nicole Chong and Malcolm Ruff would like to thank you for helping us get the word out!

Interested in a Position on the SRBLSA Law Journal?

The Southern Region Black Law Students Association Law Journal is in the process of soliciting members for its 2009-2010 Editorial Board.

Created in 2005, the Journal is a student run publication of the Southern Region of the National Black Law Students Association. The Journal was created as an answer for a lack of representative voice for issues facing Southern African Americans. It endeavors to provide an outlet for both professional and student-authored works that embody the Journal’s mission of serving as a vehicle for social, economical, and political uplift in the Southern African American community. The Journal has attracted a great academic and professional audience, and as a result, the 2008-2009 Journal will be published on Westlaw.

Law Journal experience is a very valuable asset to have. Not only will it help you enhance your legal writing skills, but most legal employers look very favorable upon candidates who possess journal experience and often prefer it. In this current job market it is necessary to utilize all resources available. Rising 2Ls and 3Ls are invited to apply.

Attached below is a description of each board position. Also, feel free to visit SRBLSA's website at http://www.srblsalawjournal.org/ for a more thorough overview of the Journal.

Additionally, I know its summer, you’re working, and may think you don’t have time to write- on to a journal. Well, I have great news…the application process has been re-vamped, and the write-on section won’t be nearly as strenuous as it has been in previous years (you have to contact Ms. Harriet Huell for the details).

If you are interested in applying for a position on the 2009-2010 SRBLSA Law Journal’s Editorial Board, or think you may be interested and would like additional information, please contact Harriet Huell to request an application or discuss your questions. Ms. Huell can be reached via email at harriet.huell@gmail.com, or via phone (after 6:00 p.m. est) at (919) 237-3446.
